Energy efficiency and the European consumer
Logica publishes a major European study on energy efficiency and the consumer
Logica has commissioned a major new study based on a telephone survey of 10,000 consumers across 10 European countries to investigate to what extent people are reducing consumption, as well as the drivers and blockers for this change. In particular, the study looks at the potential role of information and technology in facilitating energy saving behaviour.
There are a number of key findings from the research, including:
- Consumers believe they could save 22% on their household energy bills (worth an annual total of 27 billion euros for the 10 countries covered) through more energy efficiency action
- Information and technology could play a key role in turning good intentions into energy saving
- While 75% of consumers see a link between their actions and climate change and 69% say they do a lot to reduce their energy consumption at home, they are only take a small number of specific energy saving actions (on average they are only taking 2 out of 6 identified actions)
- Three quarters of European consumers think that smart meters are a good idea
- The main driver for changing behaviour is still saving money, with environmental concerns coming second
- Consumers want advice on energy saving solutions, not problems - and they trust specialists (energy saving agencies and companies plus utilities) more than other organisations for this kind of information
