The challenges of moving towards a Low Carbon Economy

There is no doubt that the World has to take climate change seriously. The evidence that changes in carbon emissions are paramount to redressing or at least arresting the ongoing climatic changes we are seeing is too strong to ignore.  Recent announcements of the changes to the EU Emissions Trading Scheme will no doubt assist, however, it must be noted that any form of regulation can put added financial burden on a company in these economically challenging times.  Meeting the regulations can be expensive but failure to meet them even more so, both in financial, social and also climate terms. 

 

 

 

This Logica sponsored study set out to identify the attitudes towards the low carbon economy amongst key European countries while also analysing the core issues and challenges that companies face in meeting the regulations being set.  Attitudes to regulations vary greatly.  Some companies embrace them and see the good that they will bring.  Some are apathetic and simply accept that change is happening, going about it in a highly pragmatic manner.  Others do not see the benefit and continue to fail to put in place the policy changes that are needed to meet the new regulations.  This research shows though, that in many cases failure to hit the EU Government regulations can be more a result of poor measurement capability than a deliberate non-compliance stance.
