The power to manage energy will shift to consumers by 2020

09 December 2008

- Test your energy personality type with Logica’s energy quiz -

The energy landscape is undergoing a radical transformation that will undoubtedly benefit consumers in the years to come.  Global demand for fossil fuel reserves is rising, energy price volatility is higher than ever, funding has become increasingly uncertain and climate change is climbing the political agenda.   As a result, consumers will adjust their behaviour to manage their energy consumption resulting in a positive effect on their environmental impact and finances.

By 2020, Logica sees four types of energy consumers emerging: the eco-warrior; the eco-sceptic; the speculator and the whiz-kid. To test your energy personality, go to www.logicaenergyquiz.com .

These new consumers will drive key innovations in the sourcing of energy. Moving forward energy companies will need to empower consumers in order to survive.  Logica expects to see local co-operative energy farms; micro-generation technology such as solar and wind generators built into houses; use of artificial intelligence and smart metering. Inaction and a failure to embrace new approaches and technologies might lead to brown and black outs.

The paradigm will move from one where the consumer is required to turn things off, to one where technology creates a smart home which optimises energy consumption. For example, the homeowner will be able to take a decision to turn things on, with the smart home having warned them of the financial and / or environmental impact of choosing to use energy at that particular time, rather than a little later.

“As consumers, we have a lot to look forward to as we become empowered to create and engage in satisfying our own energy needs.  The energy landscape is changing quickly and dramatically and we see 2020 as being the tipping point.  Communities working together with their utilities to help consumers help themselves, we will see a fundamental shift in the way we power our lives. Intelligent energy consumption will be the new watchword and the home will become the new centre of energy production and monitoring. It’s going to be a challenge, but also a lot of fun as we develop and use new gadgets and gizmos, drive hybrid cars and hopefully get closer to our neighbours through co-operatives,” commented Ken Whittaker, Global Practice Leader, Smart Metering and Smart Grids at Logica
.
Logica has put together a quiz that can help identify the type of energy consumer you are likely to be in 2020. The four categories are:

  • The eco-warrior:  this environmentally conscious consumer strives for energy self-sufficiency which they will achieve by embracing self generation and energy control technology to achieve carbon neutrality.
  • The eco-sceptic: this breed of consumer is not convinced that they can have a positive impact on the environment at an individual level and therefore action around energy consumption is not a priority.
  • The speculator:  this smart consumer is both community-spirited and financially astute. With a firm grasp on the money markets, their community will look to them for advice about investments in utilities.
  • The whiz-kid: this gadget-friendly consumer’s love of technology leads to a positive impact on their carbon footprint.  They embrace the latest technology to control their energy consumption and bills. Smart meters will let whiz-kids remotely control their lighting, heating and other appliances and they will run cost-efficient, low-emission hybrid cars.
