SNCF improves rail safety and punctuality using LogicaCMG mobile solution to monitor track quality
LogicaCMG announces that it has completed a pilot project with SNCF, the French railway operator, to improve safety and reliability on its 31,000km of railway network.
The solution equips engineers with wireless handheld terminals to collect and analyse data on the condition of the tracks, enabling SNCF to increase the timeliness, accuracy and cost efficiency of maintenance and improvement projects. In implementing this solution, SNCF also aims to increase punctuality and safety for its 13,000 daily passenger and freight trains in order to guarantee its public service charter. LogicaCMG based the solution on a secure architecture, which encompasses two main aspects: protecting the central data system from intrusions and protecting data transfer.
The mobile solution, which SNCF has been testing since February 2005, was developed by LogicaCMG in partnership with Microsoft and IBM. It enables SNCF Infrastructure Department’s 800 engineers to migrate from a manual process for collecting data on the condition of the tracks to a wireless handheld device. The device synchronises directly with the central SNCF track maintenance database to remove the element of human error in data collection and handling. Once consolidated across the entire network, the data is analysed to assess and monitor the quality of the SNCF tracks, plan repair and maintenance activities, and optimise the availability of the network.
Thierry Siouffi, president of LogicaCMG France and Luxembourg, said: “LogicaCMG France is proud to have contributed to the implementation of an important, innovative mobility project for such a prestigious client like SNCF.”
