Countries all over the world are looking for a higher level of secure border management; due to the increasing number of falsified passports and illegal border passage, the demand for greater security at border passage is increasing. At the same time, there is a recognition that ports of entry can improve their attractiveness to frequent travellers by introducing a degree of automation in the border crossing process. Typically, the top 1% of frequent fliers are responsible for 10% of an airport authorities income. E-borders is not about preventing travel, rather, it is aimed at securing borders and facilitating travel.

Automated border management
Automated Border Management and advanced passenger screening can help legitimate passengers to get through national ports of entry quickly, whilst at the same time providing time for thorough analysis of travellers in whom the border authorities may be interested. Biometric passports and visas, for example, enable automated systems to process people quickly whilst at the same time acting as a deterrent for illegitimate travellers.
Border control
Our border control solutions combine automatic barriers with advanced biometric readers and smartcards so that travellers can move quickly and smoothly through international borders. Logica is also experienced in the design of enrolment environments, where quality is crucial to effective e-Identity solutions. Together with process design and staff training we can also ensure effective enrolment with the application of appropriate ergonomics such as ambient lighting, workstation design and the use of non-reflective surfaces.
The choice of technology used in border control solutions is an important factor. Our biometrics experts will recommend the most appropriate equipment, from cameras and readers to biometric algorithms and supporting software. We are experienced in privacy legislation and previous implementations have resulted in changes to the statute books to enable iris codes to be stored on multi-purpose smartcards.
Schiphol Airport , Amsterdam
Logica has experience of implementing biometrics in an e-border scheme for frequent travellers at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam . The Privium programme enrols travellers, checking their identity before giving them smart cards containing their iris biometric. Rather than waiting for human border clearance, travellers move through an automated gate, allowing fast-pass border control.
