Logica EMO - How it works

Logica EMO captures a vehicle’s carbon footprint via a simple plug-in device fit in the vehicle. This on-board unit (OBU) does not interfere with the normal working of the vehicle. It begins monitoring the vehicle’s carbon footprint every time the engine is switched on. It can store this data for over 100 hours of driving.

The OBU then wirelessly and securely transmits the data in real-time to the backend. The transfer is completely automatic, without any trouble to the driver or interference with the vehicle’s working. While the device transmits data, it is only related to the vehicle’s carbon footprint and not its location. The data transfer is encrypted so there is complete security of the records as well.

The Logica EMO data is also available in a central emissions database. This data can be used to calculate the Logica Green Index. The remote database also stores other related data to the vehicle, such as vehicle type, model and year of manufacture.

What is the Logica Green Index?

The Logica EMO Green Index is a rating system that is based on a vehicle’s carbon footprint. The higher the Green Index, the better driver a person is. This index can be used to derive Differential Fuel Pricing. According to this concept, a person pays for fuel based on his vehicle’s carbon footprint. The lower the carbon footprint, the lesser the cost of fuel. This concept could be extended to tolls, parking charges, and several other areas.

This database and the Green Index can be used by various stakeholders such as vehicle manufacturers, insurance companies, oil companies and regulatory bodies. They can use it to implement new policies and applications related to services like toll, parking or insurance. This way, Logica EMO enables pro-green programmes such as ‘Green points’ accelerator for loyalty points, toll and congestion tax. Effectively, making it cheaper to turn green, than not to.
