Logica EMO helps save carbon emissions at the 2012 Rallye Aicha des Gazelles for the third consecutive year

Logica has completed three successful years at Rallye Aicha des Gazelles in 2012. The Rallye, an all-women rally is the first major sports event in the world that considers carbon emissions as part of their scoring system. Since 1990, the event has been bringing together women from across 33 countries to the Moroccan deserts. The Rallye is all about promoting a greener way of driving; not just through smarter technology but also with smarter driving techniques. Unlike other racing events, the winner of this competition is the team that completes the race in the shortest distance possible with minimum fuel consumption and carbon emissions and not the fastest time.

The Challenge

The Rallye wanted an accurate and reliable way to measure the carbon footprint of its participants. A vehicle’s carbon footprint had to be measured during actual driving conditions, to get an accurate picture of its carbon impact. Only with effective feedback could drivers be made aware of their driving behaviour and adopt green, fuel-efficient driving styles.

Our Answer

To make this unique initiative successful, Rallye teamed up with Logica to install our award winning carbon emissions monitoring solution - Logica EMO in 2010. Logica EMO provides an accurate picture of the carbon footprint of each vehicle. Since reduced carbon emission is one of the criteria for winning, Rallye contestants became enthused about eco-friendly driving behaviour than speed. Thus, this helped Rallye achieve what they were aiming to promote: a greener way of driving. In the last three years, Logica EMO has helped Rallye cut emissions by huge margins and save tonnes of carbon too.

Using Logica EMO, Rallye could easily assess the driving behaviour of their teams and improve it to become eco-friendly. With the effective feedback mechanism in place, teams were able to know accurate reasons for their high carbon footprint and change their driving styles and thus lower carbon emissions.

After fitting Logica EMO devices into the vehicles, we looked at a whole range of factors– emissions, speed, acceleration and braking– to come up with a Logica EMO Green Index score for each team. The Logica EMO Green Index score was used by the Rallye as a judging criterion for particular vehicle classes and counted towards the final score and ranking of those participants. In addition, at the end of the races, Logica presented awards to those drivers with the highest Green Index score by the final day.

Logica EMO helped cut emissions by 9.22% at the 2010 Rallye des Gazelles. Last year, it helped Rallye cut emissions by 10.5% and saved more than 1.5 tonnes of carbon. This year, Logica EMO reduced emissions by 12% and saved 1.86 tonnes of carbon.

Key Benefits

  • cut emissions by 12%
  • save over 1.86 tonnes of carbon
  • promote greener driving
  • lead the way on sustainability
