Energias de Portugal (EDP) - Wind Farm Management

“We asked several multinationals with businesses in Spain and Portugal, and it was Logica who presented the best solutions and references for such a complex challenge. The project is bound to become an international reference in the renewable energy sector and will allow for consolidating wind asset optimisation and manageability while also driving EDP’s growth in this area.” Rui Chousal, EDP manager for this project.

EDP Project

In November 2006 Logica announced that it had been chosen by Energias de Portugal (EDP) to provide a control and management system for 48 wind farms across Iberia. The contract covers the installation of a real-time control centre in Oviedo (Spain) for approximately 1.000 wind generators, as well as a functional backup control centre in Porto (Portugal) and a data storage backlog and asset management hub at the Logica data centre in Sacavém (Portugal).

Particular challenges being solved in this project include the need to control wind turbines rom seven separate manufactures, each of which have different characteristics which need to be modelled by the system. The data volumes coming in real-time from each wind farm are extremely high, comprising between 200–300 signals per turbine.

The first 24 wind farms will commence operating before the end of 2007 and the remaining 24 will follow in the seven months thereafter. The contract includes the option to extend the system at a later stage by a further 50 wind farms in addition to an initial three years maintenance contract.

Key benefits

  • Improves predictability of wind farms portfolio performance
  • Reduces exposure to market forces
  • Allows use of turbines from different manufacturers
  • Manages high data volumes efficiently
  • Allows interaction with additional systems such as weather forecasting
