“Simple, cost-effective
and, more than

Manager, Galp
The Galp Energia Group is a Portuguese corporation which consists of more than 100 companies
engaged in activities such as natural gas supply, regasification, transport, storage, and distribution;
petroleum products exploration, production, refining, trading, logistics and retailing; co-generation
and renewable energy.
The client prides itself for its strong social and ecological consciousness. It seeks to reduce the
environmental impact of itself and its customers through various sustainability initiatives.
The Challenge
Towards this end, the client approached Logica to implement the Logica EMO solution on their
vehicle fleets. The goal was to bring about a change in driving behavior that would help reduce
carbon emissions while also cutting fuel bills. The client wanted to also understand the feasibility of
extending the solution to its own customers through their eco friendly SmartGALP initiative.
Our Approach
The Logica EMO solution was deployed on a fleet of vehicles belonging to the clients. The drivers
were then trained on the solution and given access to the system so that they could login and view
their EMO results. In addition, fleet managers were also provided access to the system so that they
could understand how the fleet, as a whole, was performing.
Given the easy-to-use and low maintenance aspect of the solution, the project ran on its own once
the initial fitment was done. The results were monitored remotely using the web based application as
well as periodic e-mail reports about fleet performance.
Impact
Over a period of 3 months, Logica EMO helped the client reduce their fuel consumption by over 10%
leading to average savings of €33 per vehicle, per month. This improvement in driving characteristics
was reflected in the 29% increase in their Green Index scores during the period.
In addition, Logica EMO helped improve fleet productivity and driver safety through improved driving
characteristics such as acceleration and over speeding.
Based on the successful outcome of the project, EMO was adopted by GALP to be installed on a
larger fleet, as well as made part of their SmartGALP program to help GALP clients reduce their
carbon footprint.
