Smart business, smart working
In our 2011 People Survey, we saw a 9% increase in our people’s satisfaction with their work-life balance. We attribute at least part of this improvement to our smart working policy – allowing our people to work from client sites, Logica offices, at home or on the move.
Our Smart Working policy allows our people to work remotely, either from an office location or home, so we can all achieve a better work-life balance. And we are leveraging the latest technologies to allow our people to work flexibly. In the UK, our people have ‘smart worked’ since 2008 and our average building utilisation is now close to 100% against the typical 40% - 60% utilisation benchmark for offices. It has also helped reduce property costs and so far we have left 17 buildings, representing a 58% saving on desk spaces. This practice is now being rolled out or will be to the Netherlands, France, Finland, Germany, Sweden and the US and will allow us to exit a further 25 buildings through 2012/2013 representing 10% of the total buildings occupied.
As it is being rolled out, smart working is lowering our absence rates and we have better business continuity in extreme weather conditions or during public transport strikes. It also helps us drive down the carbon emissions associated with people’s daily commute, which is still the most significant proportion of our carbon footprint. The level of sickness in the UK was reduced by 12% in the two years after smart working was introduced. We have also increased productivity, with people saving 20% to 40% of their time through less travelling and more working. We still need to support our managers in their role to keep people connected and engaged with the business and its strategy.
