LogicaCMG completes first successful demonstration of facial recognition technology in live airport environment

17 April 2007

LogicaCMG, a major international force in IT and business services, today announces the completion of the first successful trial of its cutting-edge facial recognition technology in a live environment at one of the world’s leading international airports. The purpose of the trial was to ascertain if non-compliant suspects could be successfully identified at a range of just several metres over CCTV technology, using biometric identification algorithms. The importance of being able to identify suspects using a live CCTV feed at a distance, and without their knowledge is now more crucial than ever. Current manual methods of identifying suspects are both fallible and slow, as CCTV operators can experience monitor blindness after just 20 minutes. The LogicaCMG trial had a success rate in excess of 85 per cent, including when suspects were disguised with facial hair and glasses.

In order to trial the technology, a number of volunteers were photographed and enrolled on to a database along with a further 1,000 images in order to test whether the system would make any false identifications. Volunteers were then asked to mingle with regular passengers and walk through each location, as an algorithm applied an identification score between 0.0 and 1.0 according to characteristics matching a "suspect" list. Commenting on the successful trial Tim Best, director of global identity solutions at LogicaCMG said: "Using biometric technology, such as finger printing or iris recognition, to verify someone’s identity has been possible for some time. The actual identification of a person is significantly harder which is why it has had to be done manually for so long, despite the limitations. The advantages of being able to identify non-compliant people from a distance are clear for the border control industry, however we envisage this technology being extended and applied to other areas, like helping to reduce hooliganism at sports events or persistent shop-lifting in retail outlets."
