NHS Isle of Wight selects Logica as its partner to build a new integrated electronic patient record system

05 April 2011

A new partnership between NHS Isle of Wight and Logica will support the delivery of one of the healthcare industry’s most advanced integrated patient care record systems.  NHS Isle of Wight is unique, as well as being the commissioner (contracting of health services), it is also the main provider of care.   Additionally, NHS Isle of Wight provides a much broader scope of services than other mainland providers, including Acute Care, Mental Health, Prison Healthcare, Ambulance and Community Services.

The implementation of this project will, for the first time, integrate all the information held in ten different core NHS Isle of Wight systems, to support emergency and urgent care patient information requirements as the patient moves through the different stages and areas of care.  Information from core organisational systems will be aggregated and securely delivered for use by clinicians as a single view of a patient’s full record, improving speed and accuracy, improving communications, avoiding duplicated work and reducing paperwork.   This will improve the patient experience, reducing the number of occasions that the same questions are asked.

Built using Logica’s e-CareLogic solution, which has already been proven in the world class University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the NHS Isle of Wight will aim to improve care whilst making better use of existing assets and patient data, both from a clinical and patient level costing perspective.  The first areas planned to benefit will be the Medical Assessment Unit, with the full system planned to be operational at hospital ward level by early 2012. NHS Isle of Wight will also benefit from being able to extend the life of existing systems and improve medical capacity planning across the island.

Commenting on the development Kevin Flynn CEO of NHS Isle of Wight said, “This is a significant step for us.  We believe that this new partnership and solution will position the NHS Isle of Wight as a beacon of urgent care best practice within the NHS community.  I am confident that we will see improvements not just in how our services operate but in the level of care we able to deliver to patients.

Chris George, Director of Central Government & Health for Logica added, “We believe that the NHS Isle of Wight client team is setting a great example.  By bringing in a level of intelligent integration and aggregation using an existing solution proven in the NHS they are helping to extend the usefulness of their existing systems and create something which will support patient care for years to come.”

The new system will be run from the NHS Isle of Wight’s existing IT Department with Logica providing the services, training and support.  Local NHS staff will be trained in both use and support of the system.
