GreenRiders picks up €20,000 prize in Logica ‘Sustainability Stories’ competition

Prize provides Finnish start-up impetus to expand in Europe

A winner has been found for Logica’s global competition in search of innovative projects that deliver a sustainable future for local communities.

GreenRiders, a Finnish company that facilitates the sharing of transport, has been awarded €20,000 of consultancy from Logica’s team of sustainability experts to take their initiative global. The runners-up were Dutch company Nudge which takes citizen-driven ideas to help drive sustainability, and UK’s Workzmarter which uses technology to assist people, like mothers or the disabled, work from home.

GreenRiders, accessed online and via a mobile app, lets users share transportation and commuting costs within a trusted circle of peer-evaluated users. The initiative brings people together in new ways, they can measure how their actions are helping the environment and share the costs of personal car journeys, car rental and even taxi journeys. Corporations too can measure their CO2 footprint, reduce parking and transportation costs. They can minimise productivity lost when employees are stuck in traffic or delayed in transit, and offer a social element to their employees’ daily commute. GreenRiders adds to the popular trend of collaborative consumption where people are flocking to services that allow the sharing, swapping and renting of products as opposed to owning them.

Melba Foggo, international practice leader, sustainability services at Logica, says, “What makes GreenRiders exceptional is that it brings together so many different elements to encourage people to adopt sustainable practices. The concept adds a social element to your journey, is great for the environment and saves you money. Not only that but organisations can calculate their CO2 according to GRI standards and utilise the information in their own sustainability reporting. It’s a real win-win for both corporations and consumers.”

GreenRiders is the missing link in public transportation. Municipalities around the world are facing huge budgetary challenges with massive cuts to public transport funding. In some regions bus lines no longer exist, leaving people no other options for transport.

GreenRiders’ patent-pending Trusted Network makes it possible for people to share transportation with those they trust. The company now has requests from towns in Italy, for example, to help find solutions to their transport problems.

Tom Raftery, principal analyst for GreenMonk and competition judge, says, “The benefits and possibilities of GreenRiders are endless. You only need to look to London to find an example of where they can help. Traffic is an immense problem. Rather than penalising people via taxes or mammoth parking costs, GreenRiders encourages you to share and allows for a more positive financial, environmental and social impact.”

“Logica’s consultancy and expertise will be of huge benefit to our expansion plans and on-going success,” says Željko Bošković, co-founder, chairman of the board at GreenRiders. “Not only that but we see the relationship as a way of working with Logica’s customers and partners - companies we would not have access to without their help. Logica’s international footprint and experience really allows us to take the GreenRiders concept global, and that’s something we’re extremely excited about.”

The competition received over 70 entries from the UK, Netherlands, Finland, France, Germany and Sweden. Entrants were judged on their level of creativity and innovation by a panel of sustainability experts including: Prof. Dr. Dr. Ervin Laszlo, founder and president of the Club of Budapest; Melba Foggo, Logica international practice leader; Christele Delbe Vodafone Head of Sustainability; Professor Mark Maslin, climatologist at University College, London; and Tom Raftery, principal analyst for GreenMonk.
