Logica cuts emissions at the 2010 Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles
“Logica EMO helped cut emissions by 9.22% at the 2010 Rallye des Gazelles.”
About Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles
The Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles is the only rally held exclusively for women. Since 1990, the event has been bringing together women from across 33 countries to the Moroccan desert. Participants can be behind the wheel of a 4WD, Crossover, Quad, truck or motorbike.
The Rallye has always had an eco-friendly mandate. Its unique nature allowing for lower emissions and carbon footprint than conventional rally raids.
The 2010 rally took place between 13 - 26 March, with 110 teams participating in the competition. It lasted 8 days and 6 legs.
What they needed
The aim was to make the event the first global sportive tournament to consider CO2 emissions within its sporting criteria. However, to make the initiative successful, they required a system in place that could monitor and record a vehicle’s carbon footprint in real-time. Only then could they give accurate feedback to the teams regarding their carbon footprint, thus enabling them to alter their driving style and adopt more fuel-efficient and green methods to win the competition.
The Challenge
Rallye Aïcha des Gazelles realised that although, due to its unique nature, carbon emissions were considerably lower than traditional rallies, there was no feedback mechanism in place that could help the teams consciously adopt green driving.
The Rallye considered that unless a vehicle’s carbon footprint was measured during actual driving conditions, it was not possible to get an accurate picture of its carbon impact. Much less, control it.
Only with effective feedback could drivers be made aware of their driving behaviour, helping them adopt green, fuel-efficient driving styles.
Our Answer
To meet the Rallye’s requirements and challenges, we deployed the Logica EMO solution in 100 vehicles participating in the event. The Logica EMO devices fitted into the vehicles monitored the carbon footprint of the vehicles in real-time. Data from the devices was then collected and analysed after each leg by the Logica team.
Results were deduced using the Logica EMO Green Index.
A Success story
Logica EMO helped cut emissions by 9.22% at the 2010 Rallye des Gazelles. With the effective feedback mechanism in place, teams were able to know accurate reasons for their high carbon footprint. This enabled them to change their driving styles and thus lower carbon emissions.
