As the number of satellite applications continues to grow, so does the wider value those satellites can deliver. After all, without applications bringing benefit on earth, satellites are just expensive orbiting hardware. Logica is helping to unearth some of the solutions space can offer that often remain hidden.
Space represents a small but important part of Logica’s business. Many services can be delivered better, faster, or more cheaply using satellites. Space is one of the fastest growing sectors of the world economy as more businesses realise the commercial benefits it offers. Satellites provide access to services in remote areas that terrestrial networks cannot reach, or observation data in circumstances where it is dangerous to send a person.
This is why governments are teamed up with the space industry and the academic community through initiatives like the International Space Innovation Centre (ISIC). ISIC is a joint venture, promoting innovation and application of space technologies to solve real world problems. Logica’s contribution has been the development of the Applications Innovation Centre - helping businesses understand how they can harness the benefits of space.
The European Space Agency (ESA) chose Logica to lead a multinational consortium in a study on electronic health (eHealth) delivery enabled by satellite in Sub-Saharan Africa. The region represents around 11% of the world’s population and 24% of the global disease burden – and is a real challenge for medical professionals. Delivery is also a challenge as just 3% of the world’s health workers are deployed in the region so doctors and nurses are often a long way from their patients in countries with a lack of infrastructure.
Leading a multinational consortium, we will explore the use of space technologies as a cost-effective solution to healthcare coverage in rural areas of Sub-Saharan Africa.
