Putting a frog in hot water
Did you know that if you put a frog in a pot of water, and slowly heated the water to boiling temperatures, the frog would not make any attempt to jump out and his poor fate would be sealed. Yet if you tried to put a frog into boiling water, he would jump straight out because the danger is immediate! This is a great analogy that I recently heard used to describe Sustainability. When changes take place slowly over time, we often don’t do anything because we can’t imagine how it will affect us. However, when we feel the impact right now, we take action immediately.
It’s simply in our nature to procrastinate. But thankfully we have our local heros who show us how both small and big projects can have scale impact today. This week on www.sustainability-stories.com I read about how JUNIOR project in Koln, Germany is training young people not only in business, but also how to play an active role within their environment and society. This connectedness is important.
In the Netherlands, one project has gone as far as creating a 5 year plan on biodiversity, working with companies and partners to redesign services within their business ecosystem. This long-term thinking and large-scale thinking got me thinking about one of the first stories we featured, a Chinese a mega-city that involves merging nine cities together. Can you imagine merging nine of your nearest cities into one? Well China is doing this, and over the next six years, around 150 major infrastructure projects will mesh the transport, energy, water and telecommunications networks of the nine cities together, at a cost of some 2 trillion Yuan (£190 billion).
So while some of us ponder, others take action. Some actions are small and others large scale, but every single one is a worthy of praise. For each and every story that you share with us proves that we are connected by our uber-ambition to connect with each other, safeguard our planet, and our livelihoods to create and even bigger and better future for all.
Ps I’ve never boiled a frog and don’t advocate testing the theory.
