The power of combined intelligence leads to real-time results
EDP Renewables (www.edpr.com) is a world leader in the renewable energy sector. EDPR designs,
develops, builds and runs renewable power stations. They’re third largest wind energy company in
the world.
The Challenge
EDPR had an ambitious expansion plan for the next few years. So whatever system we came up with would need to be able to scale up at short notice. It would also need to work with all of the many different makes and models of wind turbine they use. EDPR wanted the power to monitor every turbine’s performance in real time, to make diagnosing and repairing faults faster and more cost
-effective. On top of that, EDPR wanted a way to look at historical data, for analysis and reporting.
Our Answer
We worked with EDP Renewables to come up with a state-of-the-art renewable management
system: the Wind Energy Management System (WEMS). The system started with just 24 wind farms
and right now it allows EDPR to monitor and control hundreds of different wind farms around the
world. Together, we set up real-time control centres in Porto, Oviedo and Houston for more than
4,000 wind turbine generators. With this, the WEMS project helped EPDR “bridge the Atlantic” and
implement common systems and procedures in all related departments across the organization in
different continents
We've helped EDP renewables
- control hundreds of wind farms remotely
- spot, fix and manage problems in real time
- cut costs and improve service at the same time
- make renewable energy more viable.
