Thinking economically acting ecologically - GreenIT

The Green IT project at Daimler is an ambitious, groundbreaking project of major proportions. It also presents numerous challenges, the first of which is to optimize the company's IT infrastructure so as to preserve the environment and use resources sparingly throughout the entire lifecycle of the hardware, while also supports the creating of IT solutions so that they themselves contribute to this strategy of sustainability.

All aspects of the information system were involved in this operation: consequent usage & spread of virtualisation technologies to optimise the use of machines, driving rollout out of communication technologies to facilitate teamwork and reduce legwork, continuous monitoring of power consumption by printers, desktop and laptop computers and finally an extensive in-house communication programme to raise awareness about the issues behind the project.

The Logica Business Consulting team played a particularly active role as part of the Daimler Project Management Office (PMO). The Green IT team devised the solutions, it fine-tuned them by comparing them with the client's economic and technological environment, before submitting them to the client, up to the point where, once the solutions had been validated, an outreach program could be implemented - a true incubator approach.

Daimler distributed information via multiple channels, thereby assuring expansive and consistent change management. The importance of this communication called for a constant onsite presence.

Innovation, project management and change management: as part of the Daimler PMO Logica Business Consulting defined many aspects of this program and tackled them head on for the benefit of Daimler, which estimates to have saved 4 million euros, 40 million kWh of power and cut its CO2 emissions by 25 000 tonnes, with specific reference to the balanced scorecard indicators monitoring success of the program in the future. The assignment was a resounding success, which explains the subsequent proliferation of communication operations, this time external, between Logica Business Consulting and its client.
