Logica provides production control MES solution to Paulig's new coffee factory in Finland

04 March 2008

Logica, a leading IT and business services company, is supplying a production control manufacturing execution system (MES) solution to Oy Gustav Paulig Ab’s new coffee factory in Finland. The system combines the SAP enterprise resource planning, production control and production automation into a single, transparent system.

Paulig, Finland’s leading coffee producer, is building new production and office facilities in Vuosaari harbour. More than one million packets of coffee a year will be produced in the new factory, which will start production in 2009. Paulig’s investment into the factory of nearly 120 million Euros will serve both the Finnish and the export markets.

The engineers selected the information technology systems for the new production facility. After a comprehensive evaluation process, Logica was chosen as the supplier of the production control MES system. Siemens will provide its Simatic IT solution.

“Both the solution and supplier were at the top of our wish list. The system’s flexibility, compatibility and good development possibilities meet our needs. Logica is an excellent local production control expert, whose references and resources match the requirements of our largest industrial project so far”, says Oy Gustav Paulig Ab’s project manager, Minna Forsström.

The production control MES system forms the link between the SAP enterprise resource planning system and the production automation system supplied by Insta Automation Oy. Distinct roles and the ready-made interfaces of the systems will facilitate the implementation of an extensive and comprehensive solution. The MES system enables efficient production control, real-time production monitoring and accurate product tracking.

”It requires a lot of effort from both people and systems to transfer a manufacturer’s entire production facilities to a new site. Moreover, the technology deployed must be adaptable to future needs. We can provide Paulig with long-term development and system expansion support based on our in-depth knowledge of the food industry and our modern component model, which provides optimum preparedness for change”, says Henry Nieminen from Logica in Finland.
