Health Safety and Environment (HSSE)

Working in the oil and gas industry rarely involves sitting behind a desk all day. The nature of the product and the hostile locations in which it is found means that oil companies must place the highest emphasis and priority on health and safety. Yet despite this, there have been some high profile incidents in the oil and gas industry, such as the Piper Alpha North Sea platform in 1988, and DeepWater Horizon in 2010.

A key factor in improving health and safety is having the ability to report “near-misses” and to improve procedures to avoid them escalating into larger scenarios. This is why we believe that collaboration and information sharing is at the heart of the solution. This needn’t just be within an oil company, but also collaborating with the rest of industry.

Soon after Piper Alpha, an industry consortium of five major energy companies pooled their resources to ensure that such a tragedy would never happen again. The solution they developed was Synergi software, a higher standard for Health, Safety, Security , and Environmental (HSSE) performance, embodying 20 years of best-practice industry experience. With full-action tracking and follow up, you manage incidents from inception to close. Trends, history, actions, and reports are all available in one robust workflow system.

We have an agreement to leverage Synergi, software customised to fit any organisation that deals with potential high risk. Over 50 oil and gas companies are covered by Logica’s consulting service.

Vantage POB
Being able to track the movements of personnel operating in the field and make sure they have gone through adequate safety training is also crucial for emergency response and mitigation. We are delivering the Vantage Personnel On Board (POB) system system to a consortium of North Sea operators, to help them track the movements of staff working off shore. Vantage POB integrates data from flight bookings, safety training records and on board lists. As well as improving safety by , it has also helped to improve utilisation of accommodation and helicopter transfers.

On the spot
Capturing missed incidents is key to improving safety procedures, and this means it needs to be made easier for all workers to capture and record incidents on the spot. We’ve been using our heritage in mobility to develop mobile solutions that improve health and safety across the supply chain. You can see some of these in our Innovation Centres.
