Helsinki Hospital District Seeks Productivity
“For HUS, Logica is an important partner, with broad expertise that we can rely on. This partnership is based on longterm commitment. Our partnership is mutually beneficial. A long-term
market presence is one of HUS’s key requirements.” Mikko Rotonen, IT Development Manager, HUS (Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa).
HUS produces services for 2.4 million patient visits per year. Each month, 15 million messages flow between the systems of HUS, regional health centres and laboratories.
Given the need to handle so much information, IT is seen as the path to efficiency. Ease of
use is a must. System selection focuses more on flexibility and integration, rather than outstanding features. For example, laboratory requests and results must be electronic, with information sent automatically between systems.
The challenge
The dramatic changes affecting healthcare have an impact on information systems. While social and healthcare services are merging in many municipalities, the boundaries between specialist and primary healthcare are disappearing. For example, video consultation solutions are being adopted, to help consultant physicians provide support for primary healthcare.
With legislation speeding up process and organisational change, process efficiency is more important at every level.

A success story
Merlot Medi, an emergency care solution by Logica, uniquely integrates mobile technology with the patient record system in out-ofhospital setting. “In worldwide terms, this is an outstanding product.
