Improving patient security with the right infrastructure

The Need

Healthcare in Sweden is facing major challenges. Intensive work is underway to develop and improve the efficiency of the healthcare system to make it competitive and enhance the quality of service. The National eHealth strategy is vital to this development and aims to improve information processing in healthcare and social care systems. Healthcare and social care collectively form one of the most data-intensive sectors of society and there is considerable demand for a robust delivery system that can distribute information efficiently, whilst providing coherent IT support and e-services.

The Challenge

One of the partners contributing to the implementation of the National eHealth strategy is Inera, which is collectively owned by Sweden’s county councils and regions. Inera develops and administrates national solutions for healthcare and social care, and commissioned the establishment of a national security infrastructure in 2008. The purpose of the infrastructure is to guarantee data integrity and secrecy. Users must be identifiable, information access must be adapted to the user and all electronic transactions must be traceable.

Logica presented the strongest bid. Hence they were entrusted by Inera and Sweden’s county councils and regions with the task of developing and administrating the national security infrastructure – Säkerhetstjänsterna (Security Services).

Our Solution

In 2008, Logica began developing Säkerhetstjänsterna, a foundation stone of the National eHealth strategy. Säkerhetstjänsterna is comprised of nine different services that collectively form an indispensible platform, which enables the development and production of other national nursing services. The Säkerhetstjänsterna platform ensures compliance with the Patient Data Secrecy Act, and is a prerequisite for accessing national and eHealth services. Säkerhetstjänsterna also supports interaction between various healthcare suppliers and guarantees the secure transfer of data between various organisations.

Säkerhetstjänsterna forms an invisible but invaluable network for healthcare and social care at the local, regional and national levels. Logica has constructed and still administrates Säkerhetstjänsterna, offering the product to national healthcare services.

“As in most relationships, we’ve had high and low points, but I think Logica has demonstrated its eagerness to find solutions for all the problems that have emerged,” says Thomas Engelmark, Head of Section at Inera.
