Danish Defence Health Service
The armed forces known as the Danish Defence (Danish: Forsvaret) is charged with the defence of the Kingdom of Denmark.
Defense Sundhedstjenste (FSU) is a joint military authority under the Defence Command. FSU has the overall responsibility for the health and physical education professional field as well as professionally responsible for sanitation in the Army, both nationally and internationally.
The challenge
The Health Service wanted to improve the system overall and make sure all information about the station personnel of the Danish Defence remained intact and accurate. They decided to introduce a patient administration system that would help them improve and maintain patient care.
Key benefits
- Everyone has access to the same information - regardless of whether he is being treated in Denmark or abroad
- The EPR solution is integrated with the Danish Defence’s DeMars, which contains military master data - a journal is automatically created when a soldier enlists
- The system can be updated centrally - for example, all physicians of the Danish Defence have the same information about the vaccinations required for a specific mission
- Treatment of sick soldiers is provided within the civil hospital service - the Danish Defence’s EPR will be able to receive their discharge summaries electronically
Our Answer
Logica implemented COSMIC, a standard healthcare information i.e. an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system, for the Danish Defence Health Service and is responsible for its maintenance. The system covers patient administration, medicine, requisition and reply, booking and business intelligence.
COSMIC is used by the healthcare personnel for documenting the medical examinations and treatments carried out.
It runs on HP blade, Oracle Database and JBoss application servers. The operating system is RedHat Linux on an Oracle Database, the application server being Windows 2003.
A Success Story
The benefits are many. The fact that the system has a very broad applicability helps ensure good and consistent quality throughout. There is continuity in the way medical tests and treatments are documented for every employee of the Danish Defence who operate outside Denmark.
It allows medical personnel to carry out research and analyses for initiatives that can prevent diseases, injuries and improve the state of health of the soldiers.
