Intelligent Cargo: the journey to the collaborative, sustainable supply chains of the future

Intelligence Cargo from Logica addresses the various challenges around the logistics, business and public policy aspects of freight transportation. Cargo (from complete shipments to individual items) will be able to interact with its surrounding environment and actively notify its presence and identity requirements.

Logica developed the Intelligent Cargo concepts within European consortia like EURIDICE and iCargo. Intelligent Cargo introduces a whole new level of system integration and is therefore a natural choice of interest for a leading system integrator like Logica. But above all, it is about collaboration to create new innovative ways of sharing knowledge. Only together can we can optimise the supply chain towards a more sustainable world.

Logica’s Intelligent Cargo proposition enables complete control over the supply chain. It maintains product integrity, ensures regulatory compliance and assures quality. A fortunate trade off is the contribution to sustainability and improvement of the quality of life by streamlining distribution networks around large city areas which helps reducing traffic congestion as well as pollution.

Intelligent Cargo at work
Intelligent cargo offers will include a better understanding of, and support for, track and trace activities in multi-modal transportation, as information about the movement of cargo will be available across rail, road and sea. The benefits of full traceability across the supply chain will be dramatic. We can already see it in our three pilot projects for intelligent cargo:

The Cold-chain
Smart sensors measure the temperature of cargo, report it from door-to-door and integrate data with ERP systems.

The Air-chain
Certified air-freight containers with sensors and global communication capabilities distribute high value goods securely, saving packaging and handling costs at the same time.

Real-time asset management
Tracks and traces means of transportation like trucks, wagons and vessels.

Our vision for the future is a decentralised ICT infrastructure that allows real world objects, new planning services including CO2 calculation capabilities and existing systems to co-exist and efficiently co-operate at an affordable cost for logistics stakeholders.
