The foundation for Smart energy. Secure, reliable and flexible networks
The Challenge
The demand for sustainable energy has led
to the increasing use of renewable energy.
Intermittent supply and the uptake of low-carbon
technologies have built up the case for finding
new ways to design, build and operate networks.
Commercial models must also evolve if networks
are to remain viable.
The ‘build and connect’ approach to traditional
grid design needs to move to a ‘connect
and manage’ scenario; distributors need to
actively manage demand to cope with the
rapidly changing energy flows on the network.
Innovative distribution infrastructure enables the
use of low-carbon technologies such as wind
power, electric vehicles and micro-generation.
Grids can be developed by evolving existing
networks through technology. But there is also a
need for a complete cultural shift that will satisfy
the needs of regulators, consumer demands and
the impact of decentralised generation. These
new networks are what we call Smart Grids.
Our Answer
We are delivering our vision for Smart Grids:
- CiMS – Logica’s Charge point interactive
Management System leading in electric
vehicle charging.
- RMS – Logica´s Renewables Management
System supports the real time management
of more than 5GW of installed capacity of
wind energy production.
- Sm@rtering – Logica’s new generation Meter
Data Management solution (MDM), offers
Smart Grid capabilities, playing a central role
in EDP´s InovGrid project.
- SIT – Geospatial Information System
integrated with Sm@rtering in the InovGrid
project manages all network assets, placing
knowledge within a geographic context.
- Active Network – Outage Management
Systems integrated with Sm@rtering
manages all network and customer incidents,
switching and planned work.
Key Benefits
Superior return on
capital through actively
managed demand
- Use of data and
functionality of AMI
to improve planning,
maintenance, quality
of supply, outage
management and
commercial strategies
- Increased control over
energy used, innovative
tariffs and price plans for
consumers/producers
- Ability to embed micro
generation and storage
within the network
- The basis for a true active
management of the network
