Securing London's Low Carbon Future

29 November 2010

Logica to work as part of UK Power Networks team to help London realise its low carbon vision.

Logica, a business consulting and technology service company, today announced its role in the UK Power Networks team which has secured funding from Ofgem for its Low Carbon London programme – designed to help the capital meet its low carbon targets.

Logica has worked closely alongside UK Power Networks and other partners for over 11 months to build and refine the bid and to prepare for this significant programme.

The project, due to start in January 2011, will involve trials with real London customers, in order to improve understanding of how to build and manage power networks in a low carbon future where more electric vehicle charging, changing customer behaviours, the utilisation of embedded generation and smart meters will become prevalent. The outcomes from the programme will be coordinated via a specialist “Learning Laboratory”. These trials, based on detailed Use Case Analysis will create valuable knowledge that will be shared with all Distribution Network Operators (DNOs) and the industry throughout the project.

Logica will be working with UK Power Networks to develop a 2020 vision for energy distribution extending from strategic network planning through operation and new commercial arrangements. It is anticipated that the first results of trials will be available within 18 months with project completion and close down by June 2014. The immediate focus will be on ensuring the effective delivery of the programme, in order to provide learning and information for Distribution Network Operators throughout the UK.

Basil Scarsella, chief executive of UK Power Networks, said, ”The success of this bid is tremendous news for sustainability in London. It means we can start developing an electricity network that not only supports London’s existing and planned low carbon strategies, but can also accommodate the many different demands on the network we will face in 2020.

“We are delighted Ofgem recognised the strength of our bid and the tremendous potential London offers as the test bed for a low carbon project. Now our focus is on delivering a project that not only supports London’s low carbon ambitions, but also generates valuable learning for other electricity networks in Great Britain.”

Tara McGeehan, Logica’s UK director of utilities said, “I believe that Low Carbon London will provide unparalleled insight into how the future energy systems will need to be designed, operated and regulated so that we all continue to benefit from secure, affordable, low carbon energy. Ofgem’s funding of this programme will help to bring a low carbon future closer to reality.”
